What Is This?
The Petz Pedigree Viewer reads the ancestry info stored inside a .pet file and turns it into a visual pedigree. Optionally, you can load a folder of other Petz to add matching ancestor portraits. Finally, you can export the current pedigree view as a standalone HTML page (no separate images required).
I decided to work on this project because the pedigree that displays in the game is cumbersome. Pedigrees larger than four generations require way too much scrolling (which was causing visual glitches and was annoying me).
The info displayed is the portrait, pet name, breed, and owner/breeder. This doesn't replace all the other amazing utilities people in the community have created. I originally worked on this viewer for me, but I thought others would appreciate it too.

Quick start
- Choose a
.pet file. The viewer reads the pet, portrait, and stored pedigree.
- Optional: load an ancestor portrait folder. Subfolders are included. Matching Petz can supply portraits for pedigree cards.
- Choose your view. Use Full, Dam, or Sire and select how many stored generations to display.
- Explore or export. View pedigree lines, then export the current view as a self-contained HTML file.
🔒 Privacy & file access
Your Petz are not uploaded by this program. Parsing, portrait extraction, folder scanning, and export all happen locally in your browser.
Browsers may use words such as upload when you select a folder, which is the browser asking permission to read those local files. Again, files are not uploaded anywhere.
The viewer is read-only. It does not modify your original .pet files.
Pedigree Notes
- Tree-trimmed Petz are supported. The viewer displays the pedigree data that is still stored in the Pet file, including Petz that have been tree-trimmed or have tree-trimmed ancestors. Trimming permanently removes some older ancestry, so the viewer cannot restore pedigree data that is no longer in the file. The viewer will indicate when tree-trimmed ancestry is detected.
- Please double-check your pedigree. While the viewer has undergone testing, please don't assume the viewer is correct just because the tree looks convincing!
- Lines in Pedigree reflects the ancestry data actually stored in the file. Tree trimming removes older ancestry data, so the list may not include every line that historically contributed to your Pet. And yes, try your 600+ generation Petz... it's fun to see what's still in there.
- Portrait matching uses exact names, owners, and birth dates. If a match can't be made with confidence, the viewer will show the default portrait instead of guessing.
Portrait notes
The viewer replaces the embedded Petz portrait background with #EEEEEE. For indexed portraits, palette index 253 is treated as the background. For 24-bit portraits, exact #FF00FF is treated as the background key.
If a custom Pet intentionally uses a reserved portrait background value as a visible coat color, its extracted portrait may display differently.
Compatibility
The viewer was tested with Petz 3, 4, and 5 files. Petz 4 has received the most testing so far; unusual older files may still uncover surprises. Feel free to contact me if something unexpected happens.
